ANGKOR THOM Ancient City

The immense buildings of Angkor, nestled among dense forests and manicured rice fields, are undoubtedly the most outstanding masterpieces of Southeast Asian architecture. North of Siem Reap lies the large city of Angkor Thom with its overpass and the Bayon Temple big smiling faces.

Angkor Thom, whose name means great city in Khmer, was founded by King Jayavarman VII at the end of the 12th century and stands out for its size and beautiful architecture. This city, which during one era was the largest of the Khmer empire, is protected by a wall of 8 m. height and about 12 km. length, and is surrounded by a moat. There are 5 access gates, four of them oriented to the cardinal points and a fifth in the east end; all decorated with four gigantic stone faces. Within the city are several ruins, but the most outstanding are those of Bayon.

Angkor Thom at its peak reached a population of around one million inhabitants, which gives a clear idea of the importance that acquired this great fortified city.
