Maha Kumbh Mela Festival in ALLAHABAD

Up to 75 million people come together in Allahabad, when the planets align, for the biggest festival in the world, the Maha Kumbh Mela, that periodically falls every 144 years. Millions of people singing, dancing, getting naked, getting high (natural only); but the great Kumbh Mela is one of the holiest celebrations in history.

Sadhus and Hindu pilgrims gather to bathe in the holy waters of the Ganges where it meets the Yamuna River, to wash away their sins and achieve salvation, and to celebrate the gods and the triumph of good over evil.

It is one of the most extraordinary sights on earth, not just the scale of the gathering, but the overload of the senses; India intensified. Not for the fainthearted, perhaps, but for the curious and the pioneering traveller, and for lovers of India, it is an incredible experience.

The recent Maha Kumbh Mela was held in 2001, so the next Mahakumbh will be at Allahabad on 2145, not in our lifetime.
