Tharu Villages in CHITWAN

Sauraha, is a village located on the borders of Chitwan National Park and it is surrounded by small tharu villages.

The Tharus have led a life that has kept them isolated in their own areas. In this environment they developed a unique culture, free from all Indian influence, or from other ethnic groups in Nepal mountains. It is worth mentioning their coloured terraces and their houses exterior walls made of clay, mud, manure and herbs.

They are famous for surviving malaria,a condition to which strangers perished for a long time. Contemporary medical research comparing tharus to other ethnic groups living nearby has found a nearly sevenfold lower incidence of malaria among the tharu.
